We’re taking time out to celebrate them and showcase them to the world in our own beautiful way.
Join this train, and let’s do this together.
Please introduce yourself sir
My name is Davis King. I was born on July 29, 1979. I am from Kwara state in Nigeria, I am a Christian. I attended Unilorin Primary School, University of Ilorin Secondary School and studied Medicine and Surgery at the University of Ilorin. I work as a medical practitioner and also a gospel music minister. I am married with two kids and currently reside in Saudi Arabia.
You are a Medical practitioner, professional singer, caring husband and an admirable father, how have you been coping?
Sincerely, it is God. I only make efforts to get it right but it is God that helps me through it all. Also raising children is a full-time job. My wife and I have to multi-task (take care of the children and run our daily activities). It is energy consuming but worth every bit of it.
How has your “faith” impacted your work/success?
My faith in Christ has thought me not to be lazy. Faith without work is dead on it’s own. I keep working hard but I never trust in my power but in God’s power to help me succeed
When and where did you start singing?
I have been singing since I was a child. I started singing in the children’s choir but my first solo ministration was at TOM CAMP (Teenager’s Outreach Ministry) in 1998 where I led the song “What you’re looking for” by Kirk Franklin. The crowd response was quite encouraging. I have not stopped since then. I started writing my own songs shortly afterwards and I had my first studio recording in 2002 in Springs Studio with Bro Tunji Abodunrin as my producer and Dokun Ogunniyi as my music director.
How fulfilling has your journey through medicine and music being?
Well, I believe that fulfillment is a sign that you have come to the end of your journey, so I’d rather say I am enjoying my journey. I’m thoroughly enjoying it.
Please share one memorable day/event as a doctor and a musician with us?
The following link gives a detailed narration of my most memorable day as a doctor – https://www.facebook.com/davis.king.7/posts/10154159099318336 As a musician it was the day a producer created the right music for my song BRIGHTEN MY DAY. I had written the song several years ago and paid several producers to create the music but none of them got it right till I met Danny X of Sound Breed Music. Kudos to that great producer!
Have you released any album(s)?
I am yet to release an album. Hopefully, I will release my album this year 2016.
Which of your songs in the album is your favorite track and why?
It is titled BRIGHTEN MY DAY. I love it because it reminds me of God’s love for me. It expresses my every day experience since I got born again.
Is there a place/site to download or buy your songs?
Here is a link to my video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwxTS6oRRmM
Can you share any challenge experienced so far?
My greatest challenge in the music industry is when broadcasters ask for money to air my song when indeed it is supposed to be the other way round.
What is medical practice like in Saudi Arabia?
It is very challenging. I had to learn Arabic to communicate with my patients and I also had to understand their culture and way of life. It is very different from the rest of the world. Road Traffic Accidents and several forms of medical emergencies are regular occurrence here. All in all, it is a learning point in my career and I am grateful for the opportunity although I burn out of energy some times, thankfully, my wife is fully supportive. (Wow! Thumbs up to learning to speak Arabic)
Considering your experience as a medical practitioner, how would you rate Nigeria’s health sector?
Sincerely, medical practice is backward in Nigeria and the reason is not farfetched – We have the human resources but we do not have adequate facilities for good medical care. There can be better motivation in terms of welfare package of healthcare workers as well.
What is your assessment of the music industry in Nigeria?
The Nigerian Music Industry has really come a long way. The quality of music has improved significantly although I cannot say same of the contents. We need better contents to feed the world with. Life is beyond money, women and alcohol. There are deep life-changing messages waiting to be made into songs.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by excellence. I am driven by excellence. I love excellence and detest mediocrity with the whole of my being. Even when I eat, I look for excellence in the taste of the food. More than the desire to succeed, my desire is to do things in the most excellent way possible.
If you were not a doctor or a musician, what else could you have been doing?
A movie director. Don’t be surprised if you see me make a movie in the future. (Hahaha interesting. Hey guys, watch out for Movie Director Davis King).
Doctor, what are your hobbies?
Meditation, writing, painting, driving and traveling.
Do you have a favorite meal?
Yes I do, boiled yam and egg.
Please share any memorable life changing’ event in your life?
Marriage. Marriage has transformed me totally. It has made me more accountable. I am more accountable for my character, finances and everything.
What are your favourite life and business quotes?
My favorite life quote is – “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. (Romans 8:1)”.
For business quote – “ Your business must have a structure that can help it outlive you”.
What advice do you have for intending Medical doctors In Nigeria?
There is no stupendous wealth realizable in Medicine. So if you are in Medicine for the money, it is not too late to opt out.
Please advice intending gospel musicians in Nigeria and those who wish to combine various business/activities with their regular profession?
It is far easier to be a secular artist. There is a ready market. So if you are sure you want to do gospel music, be ready to work harder than secular artistes. Please be time conscious. Take stock of time. Every day you wake up, write out a list of things to do, attach a time frame to each task and form the habit of ticking each task when you complete it (it gives you a sense of accomplishment). This is the easy way to combine other activities with your regular profession.
Is there anyone you want to give a shout out to?
Shout out to all members of the Dynaste Club International.
Do you have any closing remarks?
I would like to thank you for counting me worthy of this interview. I appreciate your patience. Please know that I love what you do. Watch out for my debut album coming out this year. It is titled BRIGHTEN MY DAY!
