Rubies and Potters Guest – Fadekemi Kosoko
Our Rubies and Potters guest today is no other than the founder and CEO of Fadé fashion house all the way from Lagos, Nigeria.
Welcome on board Fadekemi, thank you for gracing our blog, please tell our readers your name and where you are from.
Hello everyone, my name is Fadekemi Kafilat Kosoko. I am from Lagos Island in Lagos, Nigeria and I currently reside in Lagos.
Please tell us about your educational background.
I attended Grace Children School, Ifako Agege then James Folahan, where I finished my Primary education. My secondary education was at Foldemi private college, Ikotun and the Olabisi Onabajo University, Ogun state where I got my Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) degree.
Why did you study Pharmacy?
I studied Pharmacy for my love for the profession at the time.
Are you saying you no longer “love” the profession now? 🙂
I still love “Pharmacy” but honestly, it’s not what I thought it’d be, in Nigeria especially
What do you currently do for a living?
I am a practicing Pharmacist and a Fashion Designer
When and how did your journey into Fashion designing start?
I learned how to run a sewing machine at a very young age. My aunt was a tailor, so I used to help her join pieces of clothes together although I could not cut out styles at the time and I really wasn’t interested. The journey started fully in 2014 while I was waiting for my induction ceremony, the wait was quite long (about 7 months) so I decided to invest in myself. I started taking classes from my fashion designer back then and in two weeks I acquired the basic knowledge I needed. I’d go home every day, practice what I was taught and try to cut styles I wasn’t taught. After the first two weeks, I decided to get some community Pharmacy experience but I didn’t stop sewing and training on my own. I learned to use my discretion for most styles and the more difficult ones, YouTube to the rescue. Fashion Designing for me started officially in 2015.
That’s great progress in just 3 years! What is your brand name?
Thank you! My brand name is Fadé (Fadé Fashion House). It’s just a short form of my name.
Great, what is your fashion style? Is your brand a reflection of your personal style?
I’m a T-shirt, Jeans and sneakers kind of person on most days and dress and heels on other days. For me, comfort is key and yes, my brand is a reflection of that side of me.
Where can we buy your clothes?
On Instagram @fade_fh
Oh great, what other things interest you asides Pharmacy and Fashion designing?
I love all things DIY, so I enjoy creating and revamping old things. I also love to read, collect and take photographs of books. If I were not a Pharmacist nor a Fashion Designer, I would probably own a bookstore.
What do you celebrate the most about this entrepreneurial journey?
I would say “growth”. Knowing where I started and the milestone I have achieved today.
What has been your greatest challenge in running a business of your own?
Being a fashion entrepreneur is not easy. A major challenge for me is marketing. I have to look for ways to advertise the brand; do photoshoots, put up really good pictures and be consistent about it which really hasn’t been easy.
How supportive of your business has your family been?
My family has been very supportive. My mum bought my first sewing machine a day after I started the training so it made it easy to learn faster. When I started, my sister would give me fabrics to sew for her, up till now she still pays the same amount every other person pays. My friends are also very supportive. A big shout out to my man and to my friend, Olajumoke for believing in me more than I do myself and for their constant encouragement and support so far.
By the way, Fadeke, are you related to the popular Nigerian based highlife musician “Adekunle Gold”?
Oh yes, Adekunle Gold is my brother.
Describe what growing up with your brother was like in one word?
Fun!
What is your favorite color?
I love colors, bright colors except for pink.
What is your favorite food?
Fried rice with chicken
What about your favorite business quote?
Go the extra mile, it’s never crowded
And your favorite life quote?
To thine own self, be true
What do you do to unwind?
I listen to music and I read books, sounds weird, I know. LOL
Where is your favorite vacation spot?
Jumeirah Beach, Dubai
Are you married?
No, I’m not.
Where do you see your brand in the next 5 years?
BIG! I mean, GRAND!

True, pharmacy in Nigeria is just another glorified retailer, and how Nigerians call it Chemist makes it more annoying. Nice guest interview.
