Life humbling experience(s) – An elephant, rhino or hippo?
I wasn’t sure if I wanted to use the caption “an elephant, rhino or hippo” but on a second thought, I decided this will help you remember my message…
We visited a woman sometime ago and during the course of the visit, her ten year old daughter saw a fat woman on television and she said to her mum “mummy, why does she look like an elephant?” Wow! For a minute, I felt embarrassed for the young girl and her mum. Did we just hear her little girl say some other woman looked like an elephant? Anyway, the woman went on to correct her daughter, I heard her calmly say “you don’t even know what you will look like when you are that woman’s age”. The young girl was sober for a moment, probably lost in thoughts as to what she will look like when she is older. She’d never given it a thought, “Mummy may be right, I might look like a rhinoceros or a hippopotamus…who knows? :(”
Fast forward to some days ago, I read a post online; a lady was creating awareness about cyber bullying and how people type and say all sorts of things to others just because they feel the need to exercise their right to freedom of speech. It did not matter if what they say or type made others feel awful as long as it made them feel good. A comment on this post had read something like “don’t bother yourself about bitter, crude, rude, and unkind people, life at some point always has a way of humbling each of us”. And to me this comment said it all.
We will all have our life humbling experience(s), that thing that is part of you or that event that happens to you, is happening to you or that will eventually happen to you. It changes your outlook on life completely. It changes how you relate with people, it changes how you deal with people, it changes how you perceive people, and most especially it changes how you talk to people.
Some people have this experience(s) early in life, some very late and for some every phase of their entire life is a humbling experience. Finally, we don’t need to experience a humbling event before we realize that this life is as vapor, every step we take and every word we utter should be worth the breath. Once we have attained full realization of this truth, our perception and perspective of life changes out rightly. So the next time you are just about seeing the elephant there is in Mr A, you want to take a pause because life might just have a “hippo hit” waiting for you.
